THE TJF NEWSLETTER - JANUARY 2008 Edition 11
Dear all, HAPPY NEW YEAR! We hope you enjoyed your festive break and are now starting your New Year's resolutions! No doubt some of you are keen to shed some unwanted extra pounds from all the turkey - so here is a quick link to the TJF Detox Challenge that you may find useful! This month's article is a continuation of the Litmus Tests of function.
INTRODUCTON
The litmus tests are what a true function coach will use to help them “step back” and constantly assess what is going on in order to help them accurately create an exercise programme that facilitates the coach/patients desired function - whether it be improved performance in a certain sport (such as golf or tennis), rehabilitate an injury that is inhibiting them in some way, or even lose weight.
Therefore it is important that an exercise should not be termed functional unless it passes all of these litmus tests.
CONSCIOUS vs. SUBCONSCIOUS
99% of all movement is subconscious - so it is really that efficient to be training your body consciously?
Human function experts assess the differences between conscious and subconcious movement in order to create effective exercise programmes for their clients. A good functional trainer can create exercises to elicit a response in the body without the client even knowing, by utilising chain reaction in the body. If a person complains of lower back pain, some practitioners will assess their transverse abdominus and tell them that it seems to be dysfunctional and not working to support their spine during movement. They will tell them it needs to be worked concentrically to stimulate it, so they will ask them to "consciously" contract that muscle. Are they treating the problem? If you ask a function coach they would say that they are treating the symptom and not the cause of the dysfunction. There is a potentially more effective way to work. Click here to find out more!
